Predicted proteins from PoL cell 1 (red nodes) and other cyanophages (other nodes) were connected when they shared a significant sequence relationship in pairwise comparisons. These relationships defined operational gene families (connected subgraphs). Using this approach, we screened subgraphs to identify gene families in which at least one protein from PoL cell 1 was directly connected (hence highly similar) to at least one protein from 17 other cyanophage genomes (blue nodes). Six topological properties were computed in each selected subgraph for both the red and blue nodes. Each gene family was described by a vector of 6 Boolean values (i.e., one for each topological property). When a pair of directly connected red and blue nodes showed the same topological property, the value of this topological property was set to TRUE in the vector. In contrast, if there was no pair of linked red and blue nodes that showed the same value for a topological property, the vector value was set to FALSE. These topological properties are indicated here with examples of their corresponding values (in brackets).
