Appendix S4. In order to test whether some traits are more stable than others, and if their hierarchy is conserved across different data sets, we used the percentage estimated relative variance attributed to species for each comparison between the data sets for the partitioning of variance analysis. Spearman rank correlation coefficients were calculated to test whether the trait ranking based on the percentage of estimated variance attributed to species was conserved between different comparisons (presented also in Fig. 5). Results of partitioning of variance in comparisons between (a) Nlimited and Nnon limited availability of the common garden experiment, and common garden experiment and Mediterranean old-fields; (b) the common garden experiment and Mediterranean old-fields and the results of partitioning of variance between Mediterranean old-fields and the TRY database.
