Abstract

This article gives an assessment of the Victorian poet, Robert Browning, in his bicentenary year 2012. I give a summary of the papers at the two major international Robert Browning conferences in the UK and the USA and review the academic publications about his poetry. I also assess his reputation within the wider culture and compare him to other key Victorian figures such as Charles Dickens. By examining newspaper and internet articles about Robert Browning's bicentenary, I explore which factors are important in creating his reputation in the public sphere and look at what legacies his poetry has left.
