As has become usual with my work, this paper has been delivered orally (without notes and without even Quine's papers and books) on countless occasions. However, in this case, no recordings exist. In response to requests, I have, hesitantly, agreed to write it down. Even though the version given here was written, I believe the reader will profit considerably from imagining it spoken, with proper pauses and emphases.
