At the 17th APSR congress in December 2012 in Hong Kong, Respirology presented its third ‘Fukuchi Award’ for the best original paper published in the journal. This prestigious award, which is sponsored by Wiley-Blackwell, has been named in honour of Professor Fukuchi who was the President of APSR between 2004 and 2006 and Editor of Respirology from 1996 until 1999.

The decision on the best paper published in Respirology between July 2011 and June 2012 was adjudicated by a panel of international experts led by Michael Niederman (USA) and including Antonio Anzueto (USA), Lutz Beckert (New Zealand), John Mastronarde (USA), Professor Michiaki Mishima (Japan), and Christina Spengler (Switzerland).

The winner of the 2012 award is Dr Makoto Hoshino (Japan) for the paper entitled ‘Effects of budesonide/formoterol combination therapy versus budesonide alone on airway dimensions in asthma’, published in Respirology 2012; 17: 639–646.
