We welcome the comments and fully agree with them. We felt that such information did not add to this particular debate on service delivery but concur that a wider review of scan training would include simulation methods. We use a range of scan phantoms (Blue Phantom®) in our own unit. These include normal pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy and adnexal pathology and are employed as part of a ‘hands on’ course. These tools are used to demonstrate scan orientation, optimisation of image and a systematic technique followed by a structured report. Using the simulation model allows trainees to learn how to ‘drive’ a scan machine before undertaking supervised examinations with patients.
We look forward to the outcome of your proposed study which we think would be of great value.
