Dear Sir

We welcome the comments by Charles Redman regarding cervical preparation. We can confirm that we are not recommending this as routine practice, neither do we state that the RCOG guidelines on best practice for outpatient hysteroscopy recommend it either.[1] We make reference to that guideline as it does state how studies have shown that cervical preparation reduces cervical resistance and thus provides the background to when we discuss surgical termination of pregnancy. As in the instance of early pregnancy loss, the RCOG does advise consideration of oral or vaginal cervical preparation based on individual patient circumstances.[2]
