  • This paper is a combination of two papers read separately by the authors at the 48th annua meeting of the American Anthropological Assoctetion in New York, November 19, 1949. Originally these papers introduced the two parts of the symposium on “The Variability of the American Indian and its Interpretation.” Since they were not discussed, the papers have received only editorial changes.
