2GEOFFREY M. WHITE has research interests in language, social cognition, mental health beliefs, and Melanesian ethnology. He has conducted field research in Santa Isabel, Solomon Islands (1974–76), where he studied the cultural bases of social perception. He has written about this work in a Ph.D. dissertation (“Big Men and Church Men: Social Images in Santa Isabel, Solomon Islands,” University of California at San Diego, 1978) and in a number of journal articles. He is currently a research associate at the Culture Learning Institute of the East-West Center where his work involves comparative research on inter-ethnic perception, health beliefs, and adjustment.
