Race: The Reality of Human Differences

  • Audrey Smedley

In this piece Audrey Smedley critiques one of the more recent books of the race scientists, 'Race: The Reality of Human Differences' (2004) by Vincent Sarich, a biological anthropologist, and Frank Miele, a journalist and science writer. While many experts have condemned the science sections of the book, Smedley charges that these authors also misrepresent and distort the histories of various civilizations around the world, particularly the attitudes of people in ancient societies toward Africans. They misuse the work of African-American scholar Frank Snowden and claim erroneously that all historical societies recognized race differences and denigrated Africans as inferior human beings.
