H. Tristram Engelhardt, jr., M.D., Ph.d., is associate professor of the Institute for the Medical Humanities and Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. He is co-editor (with Daniel Callahan) of Science, Ethics and Medicine, recently published by the Institute of Society, Ethics and the Life Sciences, and a participant in the research group described in this article.
