A thermodynamic description of the Al–Fe–Si system is modified based on experimental data. Critically analyzed thermodynamic data of constituent ternary systems are combined into a quaternary description of the Al–Fe–Mg–Si and used to calculate solidification of A356 alloy in equilibrium and Scheil conditions. Experimental investigation of A356 alloy solidification by thermal analysis and electron microscopy indicate a good agreement with calculations.
