The interface formation between melt of aluminum alloy AlSi7Mg at 750 °C and alumina ceramic foam filters is compared using “small impingement tests” (close to industrial metal melt filtration conditions) and powder metallurgical, convection-less “spark plasma sintering.” Using EDX and EPMA, indications for spinel formation (MgAl2O4) are found at the interface for short time contact. Thermodynamic calculations are conducted and spinel formation is confirmed.
