The effect of ceramic filters in the steel casting process on the mechanical properties of G42CrMo4 was studied. A mullite coating on a carbon-bonded alumina filter leads to a higher content of large non-metallic inclusions and inclusion clusters, respectively, compared to the uncoated filter. These microstructural inhomogeneities have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties under quasi-static as well as cyclic loading. Inclusion clusters act as one large inclusion.
