The influence of Friction stir processing on the mechanical properties of a Mg alloy was investigated. Tensile testing revealed significantly higher modulus and yield strength for the friction stir processed specimen with some improvement in ductility. The fractured surface of the base metal showed ridges, grooves and cracks indicating brittle failure. In contrast, the fractured surface of friction stir processed specimen demonstrated ductile failure.
