Titanium implants are improved when the interface provides local delivery of bone growth protein. Quartz crystal microbalance and neutron reflectivity measurements are used to determine the structure of a modified hyaluronan hydrogel coating and of adsorbed protein. The bound protein could be released when calcium ions were added to the solution.
