Uniform magnetite, hematite, and goethite nanocrystals are obtained through an attractive method based on an oleic acid/alcohol/water system. All the products can be well dispersed in a cyclohexane solvent to form transparent colloids with vivid colors (see figure). The influence of the preparation conditions as well as the magnetic properties of doped magnetite particles are revealed.
