The photovoltaic performance of solar cells based on thin solid-state films of poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT):fullerene blends depends strongly on the length of the side chain of the P3AT unit (see figure). The development of nanomorphology within these blend films during film formation and subsequent thermal annealing is discussed.
