Band-edge engineering is applied to tin oxide nanowire/titania nanoparticle based hybrid structures for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) (see figure). The hybrid structures show lower recombination and improved cell efficiency compared to devices using TiO2 nanoparticles and SnO2 nanowires. In addition, DSSCs using pure SnO2 nanowires show a higher open circuit voltage compared to those using SnO2 nanoparticles, attributable to the differences in work function.
