A low-threshold 3D void formation mechanism and its 3D optical data storage application have been proposed for a PVA matrix doped with gold nanorods via femtosecond near-field engineering. Via demonstration of the nanoexploded void structure and theoretical verification of the enhanced photothermal effect, it is shown that the threshold level for void generation can decrease by up to one order of magnitude without critical damage to the matrix.
