Highly ordered mesoporous magnetic silica nanospheres (MSNs) with strong superparamagnetic properties are synthesized by packing and self-assembly of composite nanocrystal–surfactant micelles and surfactant–silica complexes. Pore size and magnetization value can be tuned using cationic surfactants with different chain lengths and by changing the number of nanocrystals, respectively. Binary cyt c and BSA sorption on MSNs shows high separation selectivity with good recovery rates.
