Surface-related contributions to transport properties in nanostructures are quantitatively evaluated by using Si nanowires as a paradigm. The nanowires are prepared by chemical etching of Si wafers of known properties. Owing to the surface effects, the conductivity of p-type Si nanowires is higher than that of the original Si wafer, and increases with decreasing wire diameter (see figure).
