Periodic TiO2 nanorod arrays with hexagonal nonclose-packed arrangements are synthesized. The present method is significantly simpler and of lower cost than lithography-based routes. The parameter-optimized results suggest that arrays with a smaller periodicity and a larger distance between the neighboring nanorods display the best FE performance (see figure) and could be highly valuable for designing field-emission devices.
