New quadrupolar type two-photon absorption chromophores bearing an arylamine-dibenzo[a,c]phenazine-arylamine motif exhibit large 2PA cross sections as measured by the two-photon induced fluorescence and Z-scan methods. They are water soluble due to incorporation in silica nanoparticles. The potential applications of these chromophores in two-photon fluorescence imaging and two-photon photodynamic therapy are demonstrated.
