Reactive hard templating produces gas-storage materials consisting of boron carbon nitrides with high surface areas up to 1560 m2 g−1. These hierarchical materials are obtained as copies of mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride via infiltration with a borane complex and pyrolysis. Composition and texture tuning is demonstrated by temperature adjustment and yields materials with strongly different H2 uptakes, guiding further search of materials for hydrogen storage.
