Cilia are like appendages that extend from surfaces and exhibit synchronized locomotive responses to external stimuli. Synthetically produced copolymer films obtained from colloidal dispersions such as those shown above mimic cilia behavior by eliciting thermal, chemical, and electromagnetic responses, which induce motion and color responses. These materials may be utilized in intelligent actuators, defensive mechanisms, or self-propulsion devices.
