When complementary rippled surfaces are in full contact, a significant increase in adhesion is found with increasing amplitude. The microscopy image shows a crack propagating from left to right through an interface between rippled surfaces. Ahead of the crack, no features indicating that complementary surfaces can be pressed into full conformal contact are observed. To the left, behind the crack front, the rippled surface of one of the crack flanks is observed. Shape complementarity results in highly selective adhesion.
