The effect of an altered ion concentration in light-emitting electrochemical cells is studied by measurement of the surface potential (graphs) and doping density (backgrounds). An increase in the ion concentration leads to an increased current density as well as the sharpening of features in the surface potential. By use of a numerical model, the underlying processes of these changes are revealed.
