Altering the π-system of perylene imide in side-chain homopolymers permits the tuning of electronic character (p-type to n-type semiconductor) and improved optical absorption. The highly soluble polymers PPDB and PPDI exhibit liquid-crystalline mesophases over a broad temperature range. These properties make the two novel compounds interesting for optoelectronic applications and can potentially help with optimization of morphology and device performance of organic photovoltaic cells.
