The controlled, NaCl-mediated synthesis of chrysanthemum-like Co(CO3)0.5(OH)·0.11H2O is demonstrated. The effects of the synthetic conditions are investigated in detail. The Co(CO3)0.5(OH)·0.11H2O is converted to Co3O4 nanowire arrays by direct thermal decomposition and then to carbon-coated CoO (CoO@C) under the reducing ambience of C2H2. These CoO@C nanowire arrays are promising candidates for lithium-ion-battery applications.
