A new class of alternating donor-acceptor copolymers containing ladder-type dithienosilolo-carbazole (DTSC), dithienopyrrolo-carbazole (DTPC), and dithienocyclopenta-carbazole (DTCC) units is developed. The photovoltaic device using poly(dithienosilolo-carbazole-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PDTSCBT) as the p-type material delivers a promising efficiency. The embedded silole units, which lower the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of PDTSCBT, are responsible for the highest open circuit voltage value of the device.
