A facile and accurate optical method for determining the pore-filling fraction of organic hole-transporters into mesoporous TiO2 photoanodes is described. Using this technique it is determined that maximum pore-filling fractions of up to 80% are achievable, and the long-held belief that pore-filling is the limiting factor to fabricate efficient thick (over 5 μm) devices, which is necessary to achieve optimum photovoltaic performance with standard dyes, is challenged.
