A new family of nanometer-scale twinned octahedral tilting structures is found in multiferroic BiFeO3 by developing and/or using first-principle-based schemes. Among other properties, this complex tilting is coupled with unusual antiferroelectricity. These new and previously overlooked nano-twinned patterns originate from frustration and are likely to be present in a variety of compounds.
