Blood capillary networks consisting of bilayered structures of human endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells are prepared inside biodegradable hydrogels by a combination of uniaxial tubular microchannel fabrication and hierarchical cell manipulation. These blood capillary analogs, possessing blood barrier functions similar to native blood capillaries, can be useful for in vitro permeability assays of drugs and as drug delivery carriers.
