The tailored design of highly selective and sensitive gas sensors is the central issue in gas sensor technology. Density functional theory identifies the requirements for an efficient interaction between gas species and modified nanowires, enabling ultraselective detection. A prototype system with NO2 as the target gas shows extraordinary selectivity and sensitivity experimentally.
