Hollow shells of TiO2 are nitridated by annealing in NH3, assembled into a mono­layer film on water surface, and stacked layer-by-layer into electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. This approach facilitates supercapacitor cell design by simplifying the electrode structure and avoiding the use of any organic binder or carbon-based conducting materials. The increased electrical conductivity due to the formation of TiN greatly enhances the electrochemical performance.
