The local structure of a lead-free piezoelectric is reported by Dean S. Keeble and co-workers on page 185. Pair distribution function analysis of Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 is utilized to reveal the complex behavior of the Bi3+ and Na+ cations, resolving the average structure of the two mixed site cations independently. In particular, the authors observe a “bifurcated” polarization rotation of the bismuth cations, essentially convoluting previous suggestions of (singular) polarization rotation and of phase coexistence.
