A new synthetic strategy is demonstrated for high-yield preparation of layered cobalt hydroxide nanocones (NCs) under mild conditions. A new exfoliating procedure is also developed to obtain unilamellar nanosheets by gradually unravelling these NCs. These hydroxide NCs can be modified with various inorganic/organic anions or calicined into corresponding oxides, anticipating new opportunities for fundamental research, as well as technological applications in various fields.
