Strain-induced buckling is used to generate spatially and temporally controlled reversible surface topography. The pattern morphology, size, alignment, and order are precisely tuned by the magnitude and direction of the strain. Stem cells are found to be responsive to spatial and temporal topography changes, indicated by preferred reversible alignment of the cell and nuclei as well as morphological changes.
