The stem-cell niche is instructive for stem-cell fate. This review focuses on the impact of materials, including the surface biochemistry, topography, and mechanical properties, on mesenchymal stem cells and hematopoietic stem-cell survival, self-renewal, and differentiation. The different responses to material properties between these two types of stem cells are also compared and discussed.
