Antibiotic resistance and the lack of new antimicrobial therapies create significant challenges for the treatment of infectious biofilms. Herein is shown that superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) conjugated with silver salts eradicate antibiotic-resistant (MRSA) biofilms. Eradication is further improved with an external magnetic field. This novel strategy holds great promise to be an alternative to vancomycin, the antibiotic of last resort.
