The nucleationand growth of organic semiconducting thin-film architectures are discussed in this Review. The first part concentrates on small-molecule organic semiconductors, whereas the second part focuses on polymeric species. It is shown that a fundamental understanding of physicochemical issues is critical to realize the full intrinsic potential that organic semiconductors possess. To this end, an intimately integrated approach involving synthesis, phase behavior, processing, and device design will be required.
