The integration of biomolecules with electrode supports provides the grounds for the development of optobioelectronic devices. This is demonstrated with the photonic switching of the bioelectrocatalytic functions of redox proteins by means of photoisomerizable units, the electrical wiring of photosynthetic reaction centers with electrodes and the fabrication of photobioelectrochemical and photobiofuel cells, and the assembly of redox protein/semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) hybrids on electrode surfaces.
