Recent developments in macroscopic or visual-size molecular recognition for various homologues, isomers, and anions, as well as challenging chiral enantiomer analytes, based on polymer and molecular gels are reviewed. Strategies – including guest molecular competition, hydrogen-bonding blocking, and metal-coordination – for visual discrimination are included. Possible trends and potential applications in visual-size molecular recognition based on gels are highlighted.
