Seashells have superior mechanical properties. Conch shells, with bio-assembled, hierarchical architectures of nano-CaCO3 laminas sandwiched between biopolymers, exhibit remarkable ferroelectric-like hysteresis loops with giant electrical polarization, creating the possibility for materials for high density energy storage using a bottom-up approach.
