Philseok Kim, Yuhang Hu, Jack Alvarenga, Mathias Kolle, Zhigang Suo and Joanna Aizenberg Rational Design of Mechano-Responsive Optical Materials by Fine Tuning the Evolution of Strain-Dependent Wrinkling Patterns Advanced Optical Materials 1
Various surface wrinkle patterns can be generated by precisely controlled bi-axial stress in a thin oxidized polydimethylsiloxane membrane. A simple experimental method and an analytical model combining residual stress and applied mechanical stress are reported. The surface wrinkles reversibly switch the orientation of diffraction patterns and optical transmittance in response to applied mechanical strain.
