An efficient UV/violet upconversion luminescence is found under green excitation of Er3+, obtaining intensities comparable to that of the resonant green emission. This intensity increases with the square of the pump power, without saturation effects even for relatively high pump-power densities. A comprehensive analysis of the involved upconversion mechanisms is presented. These materials could be useful to enhance the efficiency of the water-splitting systems.
