The first examples of ionic octahedral Ir(III) complexes that spontaneously self-assemble into luminescent low-concentration ordered aqueous gel phases are described. A structural model is proposed, consisting of double string polyelectrolyte-type supramolecular columns packed into a 2D rectangular lattice. A significant enhancement of the luminescence quantum yield is induced in the gel phases with respect to the isolated molecule.
