A nonlinear optical effect of a second harmonic generation (SHG) in bioinspired peptide nanostructures is found. The peptide nanostructures, self-assembled from precursors with variable number of phenylalanine amino acid (F) units, have an asymmetric crystalline structure and demonstrate pronounced SHG response. The orientational molecular ordering in aligned FFF-peptide supramolecular structures is found, and the intermolecular bonds responsible for SHG in FF- nanotubes are defined. Efficient optical frequency conversion from NIR to green and blue light is also demonstrated.
