An anomalous NIR emission band centered at 770 nm is demonstrated in KZnF3:Yb3+,Mn2+ nanocrystals upon excitation by a 976 nm laser diode or 396 nm UV light using a heavy doping strategy. A new upconversion mechanism based on the Yb3+–Mn2+–Mn2+ trimer is proposed. The NIR emission band has very promising applications in high-resolution and high-penetration biological imaging.
